A luxury patio in Winnipeg must be built as a piece of permanent infrastructure. Our proprietary "Winnipeg Permanent Patio System" is designed to survive the massive volumetric changes of the local "Gumbo" clay sub-grade, which expands and contracts violently during our extreme freeze-thaw cycles.
Our process begins with an aggressive 30 cm excavation to reach a stable soil horizon. We replace the native clay with a high-density sub-base of 20mm down crushed limestone, compacted in 10 cm "lifts" to achieve 98% Standard Proctor Density. This rigid foundation ensures that your patio acts as a single, floating structural slab rather than a collection of individual stones.
The Non-Woven Geotextile Barrier
To prevent the migration of our premium limestone base into the soft clay below, we utilize a high-tensile geotextile separation layer. This prevents "sinking" and ensures your patio remains level for decades.
Hydrostatic Pressure & Drainage Mastery
The primary cause of patio failure in Manitoba is poor water management. When water sits beneath the stone, it creates an "ice lens" that heaves the pavers upward. We mitigate this by utilizing a 2.5 cm bedding layer of 6mm down limestone chips, allowing for rapid vertical drainage into the sub-base.
This permeable approach is coupled with high-end polymeric joint stabilization. By using a flexible, sand-based polymer that hardens upon hydration, we lock the joints against weed growth and ant infestations while maintaining the elasticity required to survive our -40°C winters.
The 15 cm Over-Build Protocol
For maximum edge stability, our limestone base extends 15 cm beyond the perimeter of the pavers. This "shoulder" allows us to spike our industrial-grade edge restraints into compacted stone, preventing lateral shifting or outward "creep" over time.
